Preserving Heritage Through Innovation: Oi Kwan Barbers’ Artistic Revival

In a vibrant alleyway in the heart of Hong Kong, a traditional Cantonese barbershop has stood the test of time for over six decades. Oi Kwan Barbers, a beloved local institution, is about to embark on a unique artistic journey that will preserve its rich history and expand our collective memory through the vision of 23 talented Hong Kong-based artists. From photography and sculpture to digital media and 3D printing, each contributor will bring their own unique perspective to the project, weaving a tapestry of creativity that pays homage to the shop’s enduring spirit.

Spearheaded by the LABXR collective, this inaugural exhibition aims to celebrate the barbershop’s enduring legacy by showcasing it through a diverse array of artistic mediums.

“We want to create an immersive experience that not only preserves the essence of Oi Kwan Barbers, but also inspires a new appreciation for Hong Kong’s rich cultural heritage,” explains the LABXR team. “By blending tradition and innovation, we hope to engage both longtime locals and newcomers alike, inviting them to explore this beloved institution in an entirely new light.”

Visitors to the exhibition will be treated to a veritable feast for the senses, with something for every age and interest. Families can look forward to interactive activities and hands-on workshops that bring the barbershop’s history to life, while art enthusiasts will be captivated by the stunning visual pieces that grace the walls and fill the space.
